Tamesis Club

Charity Bridge Drive 9th November

For the past fourteen or fifteen years the Tamesis Bridge Group has held, twice a year, a Charity Bridge Drive. Often these have been for either our chosen charity, the “Shooting Star”, or the Club.

For the past four years we have held our November Drive in aid of “Help For Heroes” – once or twice actually on the 11th November.

The most recent one had 14 tables and raised just over a thousand pounds which, after expenses (prizes, etc.) realised £870. Some £350 of that came from the raffle – we sold £80 worth of tickets to club members prior to the event.

A very nice tea was provided for all participants and it should be noted that all the food for the tea and all the raffle prizes were donated by the Bridge Group. So, a big thank you to all raffle ticket buyers, sandwich and cake makers and prize donors.

Tamesis Commodore’s Trophy awarded to Club Bos’n in hospital

Ted Neal, Tamesis Club’s Bos’n, who is currently in Kingston Hospital recovering from a stroke, was loudly cheered by 52 fellow Tamesis members and friends at the annual prizegiving on Saturday 15 November when Commodore Stewart Colley awarded him a special trophy in recognition of his long and dedicated service to the Club.

The trophy was accepted on Ted’s behalf by his wife, Doreen, who said she would take it to him the following day and felt it would play an important part in assisting his recovery.

The Trophies were elegantly presented to winning helms and their crews by Nicola Colley, the Commodore’s wife, during the annual prizegiving supper organised by John Adams, the Rear Commodore House.

Commodore Colley thanked John’s wife, Lesley, for cooking an excellent three-course meal and all her helpers in the kitchen and bar. He also thanked Sailing Secretary Brian Timbrell for arranging the prizegiving and assembling the trophies and all the members who had worked hard through the year and on the day to make the event a great success.

Attire was billed as ‘Smart Casual’ which produced different interpretations reflecting the individuality of our membership – from more Smart Smart – Black Tie, to more Casual Casual – checked shirts and relaxed slacks!

Doreen Neal accepts the Commodore's Prize on behalf of her husband Ted.

Tamesis boats take top three places in Ariel’s Trowlock Trophy

Marcus Chavasse won the Trowlock Trophy in his Laser, RTM (197213) at Ariel SC’s annual two race handicap pursuit at Teddington on Sunday 2 November. He was second to Peter and Richard Mason, last year’s winners, sailing Bambusa (Merlin 847) in the first race and won the second race, in which the Mason brothers did not compete.

David Baker and Jim Green were second overall in Cobblers (Albacore 6813), counting a third in the morning and a second in the afternoon.

Donald Forbes was third overall in Greylag (Laser 188044) with a fourth in the morning and a third in the afternoon.

The course took the 14 competing boats from Ariel, Minima and Tamesis on a lengthy upstream course from the Ariel start line to a mark close to Hampton Wick Railway Bridge and down river to a buoy set near the southern end of Trowlock Island.

After the strong winds and heavy rain of the early morning, the racing was blessed with some welcome sunshine and a much lighter southerly wind later in the day, giving a tricky upstream beat and a reach and run downstream.

Lunch and tea were provided by Robin Lince and other members of Ariel in the Tamesis Clubhouse. Nicky Chavasse served at the bar. They were thanked by Tamesis Commodore Stewart Colley and shields were presented to the winners by Alan Hall.
