There are handicap races for dinghies of all classes every Sunday morning at 10.30 throughout the year and every Thursday evening from May to August starting at 19.15.  The National 18s start five minutes later at 10.35 and 19.20 to avoid congestion on the starting line.  Results are calculated by Chris Pollard, the club handicapper, using the current numbers from the RYA Portsmouth yardstick system and some local yardsticks for the older National 18s.  On Thursday evenings in May and June boats race for the Saga Trophy and in July and August for the G W Smith Trophy.  The Trafalgar Trophy race, held on the nearest Sunday to the anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar, is a class handicap pursuit.  The Burnett Challenge is an individual handicap pursuit race for boats from all classes.  The Centenary Cup, given in 1985 to celebrate the first 100 years of Tamesis, is awarded for the best aggregated result from two class handicap pursuit races.  The Great Tea Race is a long class handicap pursuit race for the Cutty Sark Bolt Trophy. The annual ladies' race for the Baker Cup is also a handicap event.  Please see PROGRAMME page for dates.

Current holders of the handicap trophies can be seen on the PRIZEWINNERS page.

10.30 All Class Handicap races on Sunday

These will be arranged into four distinct series over the year, contested on the same Sundays as the established Winter and Summer Series; Series A and B will be contested in parallel with the Winter Series and Series C and D with the Summer Series.

Each Handicap Series will be as nearly as possible of equal length and half the length of the respective main Series.  However, the end dates of the A and C series will be adjusted to compensate for possible races not being sailed due to weather or lack of interest or, as happened once in the 2009 series, a whole fleet being disqualified for sailing the wrong course.

Helms or Boats will qualify for a Series by entering at least half of the possible races in a Series.  (ie. If there are 8 races you have to enter 4 to qualify but if there are 9 races you must enter 5,  and so on).   In the event of the abandonment of a race, all entrants will be awarded points as 'Did not finish' but their entry will count towards qualification for the Series.

Helmsmen are requested to ensure that the names of their crews are entered clearly on the race sheet for every race as their crews get prizes too.
