Tamesis Supper - 1st March - 7:15pm   Ever since Ariel joined Tameesis, I've been trying to bring a certain ex-Ariel member to the club to give a talk.  So I'm (finally) delighted to present: Jimmy Cornell - 200,000 Miles: A life of adventure I first met Jimmy at a seminar on long distance cruising, he was having issues with his computer which I helped to fix and he noticed my shirt had a BBCYC burgee.  Jimmy, it turns out, had learnt to sail on the Teddington Reach with Ariel Sailing Club and had his first ever yacht trip with the BBC Yacht Club. Jimmy left the BBC to pursue his dream, to circumnavigate the globe under sail with his young family.  He spent 6 years sailing the world on Aventura, a yacht he built himself - complete with radio studio. (BBC YC legend has it that he stayed on the payroll by sending in radio programmes looking at items like Polynesian Music and the effects of independence on the Society Islands) Since that first circumnavigation, he's completed 2 more and helped design 3 more Aventuras.  He sailed to both the Arctic and Antarctic with his son, Ivan. He founded the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers in 1986, the start of a list of ventures aimed at allowing relative newcomers to long distance cruising to take part. His latest venture - Blue Planet Odyssey - aimed to raise awareness of climate change around the world, visiting many locations that will be affected by sea level change, implementing a world wide schools network, working with UN scientists to gather data.  His final act of the Odyssey was to transit the North West Passage (across the top of Canada), only very recently free of ice for long enough to do this. Jimmy will be presenting photos and stories from his cruising life, discussing the technicalities of long distance sailing and life on board and giving sage advice about the best way to deal with customs officers around the world.  So if you're looking for some tales of adventure, tips or inspiration - this is the talk for you. He'll also be bringing a selection of his books for sale.  His author list includes: World Cruising Routes World Cruising Destinations World Voyage Planner 200,000 Miles Cornell's Ocean Atlas   (All the books except 200,000 Miles are available in English, French and German)                                                                                                  Simon Thompson                                                                                                Tamesis Chief Powerboat Instructor Menu for Thursday 1 March - 7.15pm for 7.45pm supper Chilli, rice and salad with garlic bread, followed by apple cake/cream  £10pp   Please sign in the clubhouse as soon as possible so we can get an idea of numbers or email Nicky Johnson on nickyjohnsontamesis@gmail.com
