Five Tamesis sailors joined Jim Green’s “KAG Paddlers” team competing in Kingston Rotary Club’s annual Dragon Boat Challenge on Sunday 19 July to raise money for charity. It was quite a spectacle with 54 teams competing, each team consisting of 16 paddlers, drummer and a helm. Heats were held with 4 boats racing in 250 metre sprints on the Thames alongside Gardens with the fastest teams qualifying for the 8 boat grand final. Tamesis members Kaan Yargici, Peter Johnson, Johannes Wagner, Joe Woods and Florian Kruger joined Olympic skier Chemmy Alcott and some of her friends in the “KAG Paddlers” team raising funds for local charity KAG Advocacy. The team recorded such good times in the heats that they qualified for the 8 boat final in which they came equal sixth with London Welsh Dragons – a stunning result for a mixed team against mainly all-men teams!
