Push the Boat Out Day a great success

Tamesis Club’s Push the Boat Out day on Saturday 9 May was an outstanding success.  Most of the 87 visitors, including many children, were taken for a sail on the river by experienced helmsmen and many also took a trip in one of the club’s patrol boats or the sleek, fast RIB (rigid inflatable boat) operated by member Falcon Compton, Chief Instructor (Powerboats) at the Tamesis RYA Recognised Training Centre.

Warm sunshine added to the enjoyment although there was a cold edge to the gusty westerly wind which gave some exciting sailing.

Boats sailing included a National 18, three  Merlin Rockets, two Wayfarers. an Albacore. three Mirrors, and a Topper, on which one of the club’s most experienced cadets gave an impressive display of capsizing and righting the boat without getting wet!  Tamesis RYA sailing training courses were on special offer and many visitors sailed with Chief Instructor (Sailing) Eric Finlayson and his assistant instructors.

The barbecue under master chef Paul Jamieson (Club Bosun) and a group of helpers, served 125 lunches and Jo Carstens and the kitchen staff provided salads, tea and cakes throughout the afternoon.

The chairs and tables on the veranda, under the gazebo on the lawn and the riverside benches were all popular eating and viewing points and many also sat at tables inside the clubhouse.

The event was organised by Vice Commodore Carolyne Vines with the support of Commodore Stewart Colley, Rear Commodore Sailing Alan Green and Rear Commodore  House John Adams, supported by a strong team of members.

  1. There was a real buzz about the place and the club looked brilliant. Loads of action on and off the water.
Well done to everyone at Tammy involved in the day. Very impressed all round!
