BRAGANZA BOWL to Spindrift

On Sunday 20th September in glorious summer weather the classic Thames “A” Rater fleet completed their annual Braganza Bowl/Yates Cup regatta at Tamesis Club with Martin Hunter’s SPINDRIFT taking both trophies. The three Sunday races were sailed in a fickle south-westerly that sometimes flicked into various directions of the compass. The fleet sailed three different courses, in front of Tamesis Club and also (the second of the day) upstream onto the Kingston reach, where a south-westerly is often funnelled – but the strength of the wind on Sunday was low, making for challenging conditions and putting a premium on light-weather boat speed and sensitivity to micro wind-shifts. The three “A” Rater races shared the water with the regular Tamesis Sunday club racers, who also sailed the Kingston reach course, and like the Raters, subscribed to the international charity sailing event “Bart’s Bash” for which this day was designated as a Guinness Book of Records mass sailing race day.
Tamesis Vice Commodore Carolyne Vines: “We were delighted with the generosity of members and visitors in donating to this new and important sailing charity”
The fleet of “A” Raters is based at Thames Sailing Club, Kingston. On behalf of the visitors, Martin Hunter thanked Tamesis Club for hosting an excellent sailing weekend.
OOD was John Harris; Chief Judge was Chris Simon, RYA Regional Rules Advisor.
