The 5th race in the G W Smith Trophy on Thursday 2nd August was another drifter with only 2 laps completed by most. The wind was so light that even that most persistent of sailors, Alan Green, was seen to be paddling and retired from the race, that after catching a puff at the start which brought him screaming into the fleet just before they rounded the first mark. Unfortunately the puff did not carry him around the mark and he was left stranded as the rest of the fleet drifted a little faster round Canbury and onto the next mark.
Of the others, Ken Duffell displayed the speed that saw him win the Saga Trophy and crewed by Carolyne Vines won both on the water and and handicap. He was followed by the Merlin Rocket (Rocket was a bit of a misnomer on the night!) of Rupert Fletcher and Robert Blakebrough with Chris Pollard and Caroline Stilwell in the National 18 Antedote 3rd.
Overall John Adams still retains his lead in the series but probably for only another week as a number of other boats, including Ken, will start to qualify and with better results. There are still 4 races to go and 4 to qualify, so even if you haven’t sailed to date you can still qualify so let us see you on the water on Thursday.
