Although the Clubhouse and Changing Rooms are still closed, some use of Tamesis Club by Members is permitted by the partial lifting of the Covid-19 lockdown.

Please read the message which you get when you click on the red banner at the top of the website home page – particularly the instructions on how to register your presence at the Club.  I was disappointed at how many Members had not read them.  It is particularly important that we abide by the Covid-19 Secure conditions now that the Council has the authority to close us down if we are considered to have breached them.  That would be a pity, particularly as we have put a lot of effort into opening up the Club as much as we can so far.

Members visiting the Club site must record their presence to allow ‘Track and Trace’ to be done should anybody contract the virus.  We have arranged for you to be able to do this either by texting or by entering your name in the book in the undercroft of the Ladies Changing Room.  Although this may seem tedious, if we do not comply with all the requirements we are at risk of being closed.  We have tried to make it as simple as possible to record your presence – please ensure you do so.

Please click on the Red Banner beneath the pictures on the website home page and read the notice which will appear. This will reveal the current conditions and information for use of the Club and how to record your going there.

Last Week  14th to 20th July

Thursday evening saw the third week of Tim’s new Virtual race series.

Despite it being a drizzly Sunday we managed to increase our racing to include a race for Toppers and a Handicap fleet.  Although this increased the shoreside workload, thank you to all the entrants for their patience and discipline whilst going afloat. Five Lasers, two Toppers, an Albacore and ten Merlins raced in a reasonable wind from the north and a Firefly just came for a sail.  It was good to see so many boats out on the water, it looked almost normal when all the fleets were afloat.  Read the full report by Tim Medcalf in News.

Thank you Peter and Pauline Fryer for running the races, Florian Kreuger for acting as Beachmaster, Andrew and Alden Horwitz for manning the patrol boat and Tim for organising it all.  It was very useful to be able to anticipate the shoreside control needed, by your informing Tim of your intended presence, to avoid chaos and to ensure conformity with the distancing rules.

This week there was much better observance of the social distancing aspects ashore which was probably assisted by it not being a nice sunny day.  Observing the limitation of six people in a group is very unnatural but we have to do it as long as is required.  Thank you Nicky and Carolyne for running the Veranda Bar which is always appreciated after sailing in these strange times.

This Week  21st to 27th July

Tim Medcalf will again issue a special Notice of Race as well as a set of special instructions that all Members who plan to race must read and comply with.  This information will both cover the racing and give details of the Club facilities which will be available.  It will be sent out via the Tamesis Club Sailing, Tamesis Laser Sailing and Tammy Merlins WhatsApp groups.

We are trying to keep up as strong a level of racing as we can, for which we will need volunteers for the shore activities.  For future Sundays please continue to let Tim know in advance if you plan to race or if you are able to volunteer for one of the shore jobs.  We will also work towards having things in place so that we can run the Veranda Bar again.  We will post what is possible for this coming weekend on the Tamesis Sailing and Tamesis Club WhatsApp groups, possibly as late as Saturday evening, so watch out for this information.

Again, if you intend to race this coming Sunday, please could you inform Tim Medcalf in advance via one of the WhatsApp groups so that we are aware of the size of the fleets which we will have to manage.

Eric is continuing to send out On-Line Training by e-mails to those who are signed up to his Training programme.  If anyone is not receiving these but would like to, please let Eric know via the Training contact on our website and he can include you on his address list.  Scroll to the bottom of this Bulletin to see his latest Training in News.

The recently started paddleboarding section has been very active at the Club during the lockdown period and it is really encouraging to see such enthusiasm for this new facet of what the Club has to offer.

During this time of enforced Club closure we have adopted the use of WhatsApp groups for general contact and arranging sailing and Zoom for video contacts.  Since the WhatsApp groups have proved extremely effective for communication their use will increase.

The Red Banner

Please read the notice which you get when you click on the Red Banner below the pictures in the website header.

Since we appear to be entering a period where Government guidelines are being changed with unpredictable frequency, I will be using the Red Banner in the website header to present the latest information on any restrictions which have to be applied to activities at the Club and how we are proposing to comply with them.  Please look at this information at least weekly to look for changes in policy related to Covid-19.  I will flag up any future changes in bold.

The WhatsApp groups allow us to pass urgent information to you.  Please join (or rejoin) any of the Groups by asking via the ‘General Inquiry’ category in the ‘Contact Us’ section on the website.

The currently available groups are:-

The ‘Tamesis Club‘ Group. This is intended for and restricted to use by Officers to broadcast important and urgent information to all Members.  I strongly encourage all Club Members to join this WhatsApp group as this is the fastest way that we can broadcast urgent information.  This Group currently has 86 Members signed-up.

The Tamesis Club Sailing Group.  When normal sailing has been resumed this Group is designed to help helms find crews and vice-versa.  This Group currently has 73 Members signed-up.

The Laser Group has been started recently and Laser sailors are encouraged to join this Group.

The TAMESIS SUP WhatsApp Group is now available for information on Paddleboarding.

If you do not have WhatsApp on your smartphone then you can download it for iPhones from the Apple App Store, or for Android from the Play Store.

A Reminder.  Joanne, the Pilates teacher who did the Monday classes at the Club, has set up an on-line class at 10:30 on Mondays and Wednesdays, £5 per person per session on Zoom.  If anyone would like any more information they can contact Nicky Johnson on nickyjohnsontamesis@gmail.com

Members are strongly advised to follow the Government advice on coronavirus avoidance techniques and to keep themselves fit  (Pilates group, Joe Wicks on U tube, etc.) for resuming normal life.
