Happy New Year to all Members of Tamesis Club
Having survived both Christmas and the New Year, still without serious restrictions, let us hope we can continue to use the Club amenities, even if in a somewhat limited way, in compliance with current Government advice.
Last Week, 28th December to 3rd January
The first races of the new calendar year were run under grey skies with a swirling, blustery south-westerly wind, over a relatively short dogleg course. Three Lasers competed with Matty Valentine winning fairly convincingly from Chris Taggart, second, closely followed by Jim Hamilton. The N18s were represented by Chris Pollard, crewed by Alistair Banks, trying out a new(ish) main, who toured the course in solitary state. The Merlin race was the first of the Traveller sub-series in which we welcomed Stuart Jenkins, crewed by Nicola Scadden, from Hampton. Andy Harris, crewed by Matty Key, found the conditions much to their liking and romped away to a convincing victory, with Richard Harris, crewed by Maddy, second and Charlie Morgan, crewed by Alexey Anatsky, third.
My thanks to David Baker as OOD assisted by Jim Green in the Box and to Joe and Hugh McLaughlin for manning the Patrol Boat. Thanks also to Josefine who ran Phil’s Bar.
Our Winter Series will continue on 9th January and run until the end of March provided no Government pronouncements prevent it. It is to be hoped that we will continue to provide some degree of hospitality. Any late announcements will be made on the Club and Sailing WhatsApp groups.
Club Calendar has sold out.
Future Events Depending on Covid conditions there are several events scheduled.
Club Suppers and Talks on 15th January and 3rd March.
First Aid Course on 6th February, contact Mal Warner for details.
Vice Commodore’s Dinner on 12th February.
AGM on 27th February.
The survey has now closed and the results are being analysed by a number of Members and Flag Officers. We will present the findings to Club Members, most probably in a weekday Club Zoom session hosted by Kaan Yargici (who is also keen to show some stats from the website and Tammy Matters).
Dutyman and Club Volunteer Duties
It is most important for Members who are allocated Duties by Dutyman to confirm their availability to attend in Dutyman (in the dropdown list under ‘Sailing’ on the website) well in advance of their Duty. If this is not done we will have uncertainties and someone might have to stand-in for an absentee at short notice, as has happened in the past. If a Member knows they cannot perform an allocated Duty it is their responsibility to request and establish a swap using the Dutyman swap facility. Please remember to check the Club’s Dutyman system to see if you are rostered for a Duty.
If anyone, who hasn’t done so already, would like to join the Tamesis SUP WhatsApp Group, please ask Leah via the ‘Contact Us’ link on the website.
Please do feel free to let other paddlers know when planning a SUP trip from the Club if you would like some paddling companions. In winter, particularly, it is always safest to paddle with someone else and it’s a wonderful season to get out and enjoy the quieter waterways.
Paddleboarders, please do not leave the Boatshed door open while you are out on the water. It leaves the Boatshed insecure and there has been a spate of thefts from riverside locations recently.
Leah Fraser is running Paddleboarding Instruction and Paddleboard Yoga from the Club as a Club activity.
The Club’s 2022 RYA training and children’s camps calendar appear under the new ‘RYA Training’ tab on the front page of the website. As well as the dates, you will find a short explanation of the courses, how they will be run, and the costs. New in 2022 are a children’s camp in April, five summer children’s camps, and concentrated weekend courses for adult RYA Level 1 and Level 2 qualifications. If you are interested in finding out more, please contact Tim Medcalf on 07768 018972.
Charles has been addressing a number of deficiencies on the Clubhouse roof.
There will be repairs to the campshedding in front of the Clubhouse where it has rotted and been damaged.
Pilates on Monday mornings
On the first Monday of each month, Joanne Zorian-Lynn will be holding a Pilates class in the Clubhouse between 10:30 and 11:30. This Pilates class is suitable for all ages and abilities as each exercise is offered and demonstrated for all levels.
To book a place contact Joanne on -Tel: 07754 686378
The Noticeboard will be updated when the outcome of Government reaction to the increasing infection rates becomes clear. Information on the following topics has been placed on the Noticeboard.
Resumption of Sailing and Use of Club Facilities, Car Parking, Club Boats, Boat Licences.
Advice on Casual Sailing, for those who wish to go on the river when there is no organised racing, is also on the Tamesis Noticeboard.
