This Monday evening the website suffered from the failure of an uninterruptable power supply (so much for the description) in the  network which has meant that the website disappeared temporarily and the publication of Tammy Matters has been delayed.

Last Week,  4th to 10th January

The second races of the new calendar year were run on a beautiful, if a little chilly, morning.  There was a noticeable stream and a gentle south-westerly wind and the upstream mark of the relatively short dogleg course was challengingly set at the point of maximum stream and most fickle wind.  Seven Lasers competed with Henry Medcalf winning narrowly from Chris Taggart, second, with Peter Johnson, third.  The N18s were joined by two Enterprises, one a visitor from Lensbury.  The N18 of Chris Pollard, crewed by Alistair Banks, thought they had been finished whilst well ahead of Henry Defries, crewed by Carolyne Vines, and by heading to the shore, handed the win to Henry.  The two Enterprises had a close tussle with Chris Rowsell, crewed by Matt Jones, beating Peter Bide, crewed by Alistair Stewart, by 12 seconds.  Eleven boats contested the Merlin race, which was the second of the Traveller sub-series in which Stuart Jenkins, crewed by Nicola Scaddan, from Hampton were again entered.  This week it was Richard Harris, crewed by Emma McDonald, who romped away to a convincing victory, with Andy Harris, crewed by Matty Key, a clear second and Joe McLaughlin, crewed by Sean Roberts, third.

My thanks to Charles Fox as OOD assisted by Robert Blakebrough in the Box and to Matt P-J and John Edmondson for manning the Patrol Boat.  Thanks also to Chloe and Yann who ran Phil’s Bar.

This Week

Our Winter Series, with the embedded Merlin Traveller and Guest Enterprise limited Series, will continue on 16th January and is due to be run until the end of March.  It is to be hoped that we will be able to provide some degree of hospitality.  Nicky Johnson is hopeful that Alaphia will be able to provide lunches next Sunday and this will be confirmed by announcements on the Club and Sailing WhatsApp groups.

Club Calendar  has sold out.

Future Events   Depending on Covid conditions there are several events scheduled.

The Club Supper and Talk on 15th January has been postponed but that for 3rd March is currently still planned to take place.

First Aid Course on 6th February, contact Mal Warner for details.

Vice Commodore’s Dinner on 12th February.

AGM on 27th February.

Membership Survey

The results of the survey are still being analysed and we will present the findings to Club Members, most probably in a weekday Club Zoom session hosted by Kaan Yargici (who is also keen to show some stats from the website and Tammy Matters).

Dutyman and Club Volunteer Duties

It is most important for Members who are allocated Duties by Dutyman to confirm their availability to attend in Dutyman (in the dropdown list under ‘Sailing’ on the website) well in advance of their Duty.  If this is not done we will have uncertainties and someone might have to stand-in for an absentee at short notice, as has happened in the past.  If a Member knows they cannot perform an allocated Duty it is their responsibility to request and establish a swap using the Dutyman swap facility.  Please remember to check the Club’s Dutyman system to see if you are rostered for a Duty.

If anyone, who hasn’t done so already, would like to join the Tamesis SUP WhatsApp Group, please ask Leah via the ‘Contact Us’  link on the website.

Paddleboarders, please do not leave the Boatshed door open while you are out on the water.  It leaves the Boatshed insecure and there has been a spate of thefts from riverside locations recently.

Leah Fraser is running Paddleboarding Instruction and Paddleboard Yoga from the Club as a Club activity.

The Club’s 2022 RYA training and children’s camps calendar appear under the new ‘RYA Training’ tab on the front page of the website.  As well as the dates, you will find a short explanation of the courses, how they will be run, and the costs.  New in 2022 are a children’s camp in April, five summer children’s camps and concentrated weekend courses for adult RYA Level 1 and Level 2 qualifications.  If you are interested in finding out more, please contact Tim Medcalf on 07768 018972.

The Tamesis Noticeboard is now being used to show information on the following topics .

Resumption of Sailing and Use of Club Facilities, Advice on Casual Sailing and Paddleboarding, Car Parking, Club Boats, Boat Licences, Pilates and Works.
