N18 Inland Championship, Sunday September 1st

Six National 18s of various generations descended on the club on Sunday 1 st September 2024 to take part in the annual Inlands Championship. The turnout included two Ultras, two Ultimates and two Penultimates, which included Ollie Houseman with 'Ace' and Trevor Chanter from Bough Beech SC with 'Eastern Promise'. The mix of different generations of 18s made for some exciting racing as different boats would battle it out throughout the races. An

9th GW Smith Trophy Race, Thursday August 29th

Images by Chris Wade For this, the final race in the 2024 GW Smith trophy, the sun shone, and the wind wafted gently across the river, generally from the west northwest, but from most other directions at times. In a change from the previous 3 races, Andy Harris, the OOD set a simple sausage course starting downstream towards Lensbury 14 boats came to the start line, including 4 Merlins, 7

8th GW Smith Trophy Race, Thursday August 22nd

Image by Tom Jones The forecast for this race was poor, grey skies and potentially strong winds, possibly a factor in a lower turnout than of late. The west-southwest wind abated enough to provide good sailing but with stronger gusts to cause a couple of capsizes and changeable strength and direction around the course. John Adams, OOD for the day set the by now familiar P course. Six boats started,

7th GW Smith Trophy race, Thursday August 15th

Image by Alastair Banks Like the previous Thursday, the poplars on the edge of the council car park where swaying energetically in a strong breeze as we arrived. However, this breeze decreased significantly for the race and left us with a relatively benign wind, predominantly from the south, with a few remnant gusts to keep us on our toes. OOD for the night, Charlie Morgan set us a dogleg with an upstream

6th GW Smith Trophy Race, Thursday August 8th

Image by Ilker Sener No lightning this week, but with forecasts of gusts up to 31mph, was this going to be a second cancellation? Thankfully the wind on the river did not live up to the forecasts and provided a very nice although flukey west south-westerly, for which OOD Mike Adams set a dogleg to make sure we were all awake after the day's work. The turnout was good with

5th GW Smith Race, Thursday 1st August (Abandoned)

The forecast for the 5 th GW Smith Trophy race was for thunder and lightning. Around an hour before the race was to start, the rain, thunder and lightning came. After a brief discussion with the few potential competitors, sheltering under the veranda and watching the rain fall, the decision was made to abandon the race on safety grounds, avoiding the risk of lightning strikes. True to form, the storm cleared, a wind came

  • 4th GW Smith Trophy Race, Thursday July 25th

It was a grey evening with the odd bout of drizzle brought in by a light south-westerly to keep us cool. There was an occasional break in the clouds to give an atmospheric glimpse of the setting sun, and the evening's racing was enlivened by the appearance of a seal towards the Surrey bank. Given the gloominess of the weather there was a good entry of 13 boats, 3 Merlins, 3 Toppers helmed

A bit more wind than the previous Thursday, but not a lot, and from a different direction, roughly southwest, leading the OOD, Mal Warner to set a simple Canbury/Lensbury course. Nine boats contested the race, 3 ILCA7s, 3 Solos, 2 Merlins and Matt P-J in the Rooster 8.1. David Baker and Carolyne Vines in David's Merlin took an early lead, closely followed by Matt P-J in the Rooster. By the end of

    Junior Regatta and Barbecue 2024

2nd GW Smith Trophy Race, Thursday July 11th

Image by Carolyne Vines The wind in the afternoon did not bode well for the evening race, very light, occasionally not there at all and fluctuating between south, west and north. However by the time the OOD, David Baker, and his team had arrived it had settled down to a NNW but still variable and light, leading David to set a course to Lensbury and then to Canbury. Despite the
