Queen Mary SC Junior Open Meeting, Sunday 23rd June
Published 21:48 on 24 Jun 2024
Our intrepid team of three Tammy Juniors and parents travelled all the way to Queen Mary Sailing Club in Ashford, Middlesex on Sunday for the Junior Open Meeting. A few yawns were inevitable early on and came as no surprise after the fun and excitement of the Tammy Summer Party on Saturday night - and that was just the parents!
If you don't know Queen Mary Reservoir, it's a huge expanse of fresh water just ~30 minutes away and its a great venue nearby for our sailors (young and old) to improve their skills and build their confidence at sailing in slightly more challenging conditions and race courses than we usually get on the river at Teddington. Fortunately the weather gods smiled on us and we had lots of sunshine and just enough wind for the Race Officer to run three races; the first before lunch, then a barbecue, followed by two races in the afternoon.
We put our 2x nearly-new race-spec Toppers into action for the first time on the vibrant RYA London & Southeast Region Topper open meeting circuit. Many of you will remember that these boats were launched by the Mayor of Richmond at our Discover Sailing day back on the 11th May and are sponsored by SporTedd, a Teddington based Sports charity that's focused on supporting local sports clubs and teams.
Our intrepid Tammy racers were Arthur PJ, Henry Joseph and Josie Tanner. Battles from Saturday's Junior Sailing sessions at Tammy were resumed and occasionally our sailors focused on racing the other 30 sailors in the fleet. Both Arthur and Henry achieved a top-ten race result in a very competitive Topper 5.3 fleet of 33 boats. So well done all.
More Open Meetings to follow later in the Summer. All our Tammy Juniors are welcome to come and play out on the local race circuit.

For the curious amongst you, in the photos below, in the background, you can just about see Shepperton Studios where they filmed Star Wars, and Hyperia, Thorpe Park's newest roller-coaster, the tallest and fastest in the UK. Also making a guest appearance was our very own Griff Tanner in the boat with the black spinnaker, out training for the upcoming Musto Skiff Worlds and rather recklessly approaching a fleet of Toppers on port tack!!!
