Topper open meeting at Itchenor SC on 14-15th June 2025

Over the weekend, our two super keen Tammy Topper Team travellers Ben Hughes and Arthur PJ went down to Itchenor SC for the London & Southeast regional championship on 14-15th June 2025.

Itchenor Sailing Club is a really beautiful spot on Chichester Harbour, halfway up the channel that goes all the way to Chichester. In the other direction heading out to sea, there's a very nice public footpath that continues all the way to East Head with views over to Hayling Island and the Isle of Wight from West Wittering beach.

So after a chastening experience at Whitstable a few weeks ago our racers opted to downsize their rigs to 4.2 sqm sails and upgrade their racing skills so that they could spend more of the weekend upright than inverted! This proved to be a very sensible move.

On Saturday, there were four races in 20-25 knots of wind. With the kids out on the water for a few hours, it gave the parents plenty of time to put up our tents at the nearby campsite on Scott's Farm and catch a quick snooze. Then it was back to the sailing club to recover boats and sailors and enjoy cold beer and lemonades on the lawn. Then a dinner of moules and frites and burgers at the nearby Ship Inn.

On Sunday, there were another four races with a rather more moderate 12-20 knots of wind. This time the parents decided to walk down the footpath to the race area and then continue all the way down to West Wittering for an ice cream; which proved a little bit further than originally planned! Then it was about turn and back to the sailing club via The Quarterdeck Cafe and a very tasty sourdough pizza, to recover sailors, pack up boats and head for home!
