Tamesis Club relies on volunteers. We offer sailing racing under the Club Season Notice of Race, and host Open events.
Juniors are already successfully starting to learn about Racing and shore-side Race Management.![]()
Today we started training some adults as well!
Each event relies on an Officer of the Day who acts as Race Officer, and is supported shoreside by a volunteer in the starting/finishing box and on the water by a Safety boat Patrol Driver and Crew.
To build confidence and competence we are providing Race Management training and OOD training.
We had 8 people attend the first session, and everyone learned something, no matter their level of experience.
With thanks to the Rear Commodore Sailing, Hon Sailing Secretary, Club Captain, Commodore elect and some senior Open OOD there were three people trained up.
The material was reviewed and several improvements will be made to the OOD Guidance.
There was a focus on Race Management, which included:
* setting up at the Smithy (Starting/Finishing Box)
* starting procedures
* bending on flags
* understanding the race sheet
* actually practising a starting sequence (running off the atomic clock)
* monitoring and recording a race
* recalls
* shortening the course
* finishing
* race results.
Going forward we would like to invite more volunteers to sign up for training by emailing RCS@tamesisclub.co.uk
We will offer:
* OOD Training to Club level and to Open Meeting level.
* Race Management Training - aimed at the less experienced and new to racing, to train for the BOX ASSISTANT role ON on the following dates:
Saturday 23 May
Saturday 30 May
