A note on the allocation of prizes.
At Tamesis Club there are two mechanisms for determining the number of places that win prizes. These are controlled in the Sailing Instructions or a Notice of Race.
Places under the Sailing Instructions
At the Winter and Summer Prizegivings, the number of prizes in a club series is determined under the Sailing Instructions.
Places under a specific Notice of Race, for example the Annual Regatta
For specific events, like the Annual Regatta, some variations may apply under the Notice of Race. When fewer than 4 boats qualify, (i.e. only one, two or three boats are racing), while the Cup or Trophy is awarded, no second place prize is given. So for example, in the NOR of the Annual Regatta, "Prizes for places in a race will be awarded for each class or fleet, where four or more boats raced, on the basis of the square root of the number of entries rounded up to the next whole number. If three or fewer boats race, no place prizes are awarded. If four boats race, first and second are awarded. If five to nine boats race there are prizes for first, second and third. Fourth place wins a prize when ten or more boats race, and fifth place wins a prize when 17 or more boats race, and so on. Additional awards may be given at the discretion of the Rear Commodore Sailing."

Workings and Evidence
- The Calculation Rule: The Standard Sailing Instructions (SI 19.1) explicitly state that for Club aggregate series, the number of prizes is the square root of the qualifying helms, "rounded up to the next whole number".
Rounding Logic: Because the instruction is to round up, any fractional result (such as 2.449 for 6 helms) immediately moves to the next whole number (3). If the square root is a perfect whole number (such as 2.000 for 4 helms), it remains at that whole number.
