3rd GW Smith Trophy Race, Thursday July 18th

Published 01:00 on 24 Jul 2024

A bit more wind than the previous Thursday, but not a lot, and from a different direction, roughly southwest, leading the OOD, Mal Warner to set a simple Canbury/Lensbury course.

Nine boats contested the race, 3 ILCA7s, 3 Solos, 2 Merlins and Matt P-J in the Rooster 8.1.

David Baker and Carolyne Vines in David's Merlin took an early lead, closely followed by Matt P-J in the Rooster. By the end of the second lap, Matt was leading with David and Carolyne 2nd ahead of the Solos of Tim Barr, Charlie Morgan and Joe McLaughlin in 3rd, 4th and 5th. David and Carolyne retook the lead at the end of the 3rd lap and maintained it to the end, leading Matt P-J home by just over a minute. Behind them the Solos were having a great battle, with Tim Barr leading them for 3 of the 6 laps, before first Charlie and then Joe came through to take 3rd, 4th with Tim crossing the line in 5th. Ros Warwick-Haller was the first ILCA7 in 6th place.

Places changed once handicaps were applied with Matt P-J 1st in the Rooster 8.1, Charlie Morgan in the demonstration Solo 2nd and David and Carolyne 3rd in the Merlin.

Overall Matt P-J, with 3 good results counting, is in the lead, followed by Joe McLaughlin in his Solo and Lyra Wade in an ILCA7.

Thanks to OOD Mal Warner, with Alastair Banks in the box and Tim Medcalf and Ilker Sener in the patrol boat.

A nice summer evening was rounded off by a great meal of Beef Bourguignon with tagliatelle, with a beetroot, cherry tomatoes, eggs rocket and chicory. Followed by a cheese platter and chutney. He was ably assisted in the kitchen and bar by Jann and Juna.
