3rd Saga Trophy Race, Thursday 16th May

Published 01:00 on 18 May 2024

At the beginning of the evening, it looked as if this race would also have to be abandoned through lack of wind. However just as the OOD, Marcus Chavasse, was about to make the decision to cancel, he was persuaded by the faintest zephyr and a couple of boats rigged in anticipation of sailing, to be optimistic and hold the race.

While not a massive fleet, 7 boats came to the starting line, 4 ILCA7s, a couple of Merlins and a N18.

By the start the wind had risen enough to give us a good race with a beat upstream and run/reach downstream, waiting until we had finished before dying away to a flat calm.

David Baker crewed by Barbara Adams in their Merlin took the lead from the start and proceeded to increase that as the race progressed. John and Zoƫ Adams in the second Merlin tried to stay close to Dave and Barbara but fell back and was eventually overtaken by Charles Fox and Robert Blakebrough in their N18. While the Adams' Merlin managed to cross the line in 3rd, Matthew P-J in his Laser was not far behind in 4th.

On handicap, David and Barbara had done enough to win, with Charles and Robert 2nd and Matt P-J 3rd.

Thanks to Marcus as OOD for having the courage of his convictions and his box/patrol boat team of Ian Ramage, William Scaldwell and Steven Lucas.

Jean Michel, ably assisted by Alfie, provided a very tasty supper of seared salmon and mixed salads followed by chocolate brownie.

Hope fully the conditions will be better this Thursday and we can have more boats out to fight for the Saga Trophy.
