1st Saga Trophy Race, 2nd May, 2024

1st Saga Trophy Race, 2nd May, 2024

The evenings have lengthened enough for us to start our Thursday evening races for 2024.

While the calendar suggests that it is summer, the weather was not particularly summer like, being greyish with a fitful west south westerly wind and a strong stream from recent rains. Nevertheless 10 boats came to the starting line, 6 Merlin Rockets, a couple of LCA7s. a Solo and a N18. Stewart Colley, OOD for the night, set a simple sausage course starting against the stream up to Canbury.

While the course might have been simple, making the first mark against the stream was not for most. Charlie and son Bejamin and their Merlin however rounded clear of all and maintained their lead to the end. Behind him Andrew and Nim Harris in their Merlin worked their way through the fleet after unusually being buried in the fleet at the first mark and were closing in on the Morgans but ran out of time and were 2nd across the line. They were followed by another Merlin helmed by David Baker with Carolyne Vines as crew. Tim Medcalf was sailing his Solo to very good effect at the front end of the fleet and finished 4th across the line.

The rest of the fleet were a little less successful in the difficult conditions, one even having to be towed back after losing way around Lensbury and starting to drift at ever increasing speed to Teddington Lock, and were all lapped by the first 4 boats.

On handicap, the Morgans just managed save their time on Tim and his Solo with the Andy and Nim in 3rd.

Thanks to Stewart as OOD with Alastair Banks in the box and with Florian Krueger and Tim Barr in the Patrol Duty.

Jean-Michel prepared a tasty Chicken Fricassee accompanied by green beans and roasted peppers and an avocado and watercress salad followed by Scandinavian iced berries. He was ably assisted in the bar and kitchen by Charlotte, Jessica and Jennifer.
